Whether you're traveling for a few days or a few weeks, these tips can help you make the most of your GigSky data plan.
1. Use Wi-Fi when it's available
Connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks for activities that use a lot of data, such as:
Streaming videos
Video calls
Downloading large files
Updating apps
Backing up photos
2. Turn off mobile data when you don't need it
If you're not using your phone, turning off mobile data can help prevent background usage.
3. Disable automatic app updates
Prevent apps from downloading updates over mobile data.
Use Wi-Fi instead whenever possible.
4. Limit background data
Many apps continue using data even when you're not actively using them.
You can restrict background data for apps you don't need while traveling.
iPhone or iPad
Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
Turn off mobile data for individual apps.
Android
Depending on your device, you can:
Enable Data Saver, or
Restrict background data for individual apps.
Refer to your device manufacturer's instructions for the exact steps.
5. Pause cloud backups
Photo and file backups can consume a significant amount of data.
While traveling, consider temporarily pausing services such as:
iCloud Photos
Google Photos
Dropbox
OneDrive
6. Reduce email syncing
Set your email to Manual or reduce how often it checks for new messages while using mobile data.
7. Avoid data-heavy activities
These activities can use large amounts of data:
HD or 4K video streaming
Large file downloads
Online gaming
Video conferencing
Whenever possible, use Wi-Fi for these activities.
8. Use your hotspot carefully
If you enable Personal Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot, every connected device shares your GigSky data plan.
To reduce data usage on connected devices:
Turn off automatic updates.
Pause cloud backups.
Disconnect devices when they're no longer in use.
Good to know
The GigSky app lets you monitor your remaining data throughout your trip.
If your plan supports top-ups, you can purchase additional data directly from the app.
